BIMBI IROM: We're goingto do a peer review workshop, all right? Not peer-- review workshopof scientific posters, OK? And we're going to use the samerubric that's there for you, for your work. They were dividedinto groups, and they had to make aposter presentation of on a scientific topic. And they had to describe theprocess for a lay audience and why that posterwas important, or why the processwas important. So on that particularday, we used that as a workshop for them todo a peer review of posters that I brought in from outside. We put up the posterand the rubric together, and each group hadto judge the poster. You have to assign a number-- anumerical grade assessment, OK? For each category. You look at the headings. You look at the spacing. You look at the[? statistics. ?] You look at the color schema. You look at the clarityof the information. You look at how the posterwas structured in such a way that the reader couldeasily go from step one, to two, to three,to four, to five. And if that wasn'thappening, then they had to offer a critique. And they had to givea justification. So it was important, too, forthem to pay attention and say, OK. Why are we, as a group, givingposter number 1 a 5 out of 10, in terms of aesthetics, orcolor schema, or spacing, or structure? The point was thatthey would take away the lessons of theworkshop or the peer review back to when theyare actually starting to design those posters. And the interestingthing was that this was the same rubric thatwas going to be used for the assignment, itself. So they had tolook at the poster through the lens ofthe rubric, right? So it kind of forces them toengage with the rubric itself, and see what is it thatI, as the instructor, am asking them to do. And it's one way ofdoing it stealthily. Because if you ask themto read the rubric, I would assume not manypeople would actually sit down and read the rubric,until their grades are bad. Right? And then they comerunning back to you and say, why did I get this? Or why did I receivethis grade, that grade? So it was serving acouple of purposes-- one, engaging with the tech itself,making them use the tech productively, makingthem use the rubric, making them pay attentionto what I was looking for, and so that they can stepup their game, so to say.

What is this thing? This is a scientific poster. They spelled my name wrong. You know how in middleschool and high school, sometimes you would doa project and then you'd have to make a poster about it? And you would gointo Microsoft Word, and you would make3D text to put up at the top as yourtitle, and then you'd have different sectionsabout the introduction, and the conclusions, andthe middle, and the body, and all the stuff that you did? Well, I remember thinking,why am I doing this? It was fun. Like, I kind of liked it. But I rememberthinking, you know, adults don't make postersat their real jobs. Science adults do. Scientific posters areactually a really common way of getting yourresearch out there at places like conferences. You make a poster,and you set it up, and you often standnext to it and talk to the people who come upto see your poster about it. So it's sort of avisual thing that you can point to show them yourdata while you're trying to talk about your project. And it's a reallygreat way for you to both get yourinformation out there, often before it'sfully published, and also to getfeedback on your project while you're still doing it. Most posters areglossy paper, you know, giant, printed out sheet. But some posters arenow made of fabric. And so this is really niceif, like me, you're traveling, and we need to bring yourposter and put in your suitcase, and then you justwant to iron it when you're there, rather thanhaving to carry a giant poster tube. You can also wear itas a science cape. Very "in" this fall. Now, I can't showyou this poster because this stillhas a whole bunch of unpublished stuff on it. And honestly, this one does too. But I've already presentedit on the internet, and you could gowatch that here. I've presented this posterat a conference last fall. And it's not the greatestposter in the world. But I want to use it todemonstrate some science poster stuff. So it's really got allthose same basic pieces you would think about if youwere making one for. school. You know, you get a title. And then there's anabstract or introduction. And then I give a whole bunchof background information. I talk about the methodsthat I used to do my project. Then I talked about theresults to do the project. And then at the end, I'vegot conclusions and stuff. Is this working for you? This is real helpful, I know. But what I hope youcan see is that there are lots of pictures. OK, this is avisual way of trying to get across my methods,and my results, and my data. I try to make my postersvisual because posters are unique in that they haveto play this dual role where sometimes they haveto stand on their own if you're not thereby the poster. Often at a conference,you'll hang up your poster one morning, and it'll staythere for a couple days. And people can sortof walk around. So the poster needs tobe able to demonstrate a lot of the thingsthat a paper would. It really needs to be ableto tell the story on its own. But also, there areoften poster sessions where you are standing with it,where you are using the poster to help you tell your story. So you don't wantit to just be text, because you want to be ableto talk about those things and to really usethem and utilize them. So, what have we learned? Scientists make posters. Posters are both visual aidsand storytellers on their own. And they can be kindof big and unwieldy. I have to give threeposters this fall. One, I presented atmy department retreat a couple weeks ago. One, I'm presenting at theAmerican Society of Human Genetics up in Vancouver. And then one, I'm presentingat the American Heart Association in New Orleans. And that's really one of thenice things about a poster, is that my projectisn't at a stage where I'm going to give a gianttalk at any one of these three things. But still, a poster allowsme to present my project to the community there atall three of these events, and get feedback. So I already gotsome great feedback at the genetics retreat. And I'm hoping to getfeedback from people way outside of my departmentat these two conferences I'm going to. So, posters allowlots of scientists to present a lot ofscience all at once, and get great feedbackfrom lots of cool people. And poster sessionsoften have great snacks. So if you want a lotof people to give you feedback on your poster, setup right by the cookie stand. That's where you got to be. Go forth and makescience posters. Hey, hey, we've got to talk. So, you might have noticedthat my posting schedule has been a little erratic lately. Things have been kind of crazy. But I have a couplereally cool, really great video projects lined upthat I'm working on in October, November, and December. I'm super excited about them. How to create a better research poster in less time (including templates)

Posters at the Capitol is an opportunity for undergraduate students who have undertaken research projects mentored by faculty to show off their work, to show it off in a very public location, and to show it off in a location where the money that often supports those projects comes from, the legislature. It’s always nice to have some kind of recognition when you put this kind of time and effort into a project. Doing research with the University of Louisville as an undergrad has been a great opportunity for me. The fact that I have gotten to work so closely with other students, professors in the biology department and it’s been a great talking piece for applying to graduate schools as well. This event is to call attention to the legislators, to the importance of undergraduate research, to the overall curriculum, and it’s for their support for undergraduate curriculum and also for research. It’s also important to engage students in research because it helps with retention and graduation rates. Research has been a great opportunity and like I’ve said it’s been a lot of fun, I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s definitely made my career as an undergrad better all around. Hello every one! Today we will continue working on our poster. And I would recommend if you have a department at your University to also take a look at posters that other people made. And especially take a look at the text sizes and pick a poster were you like the text size, and the spacing and the general layout. I would also recommend to take a ruler and actually measure the text size and also the distances between the objects. SO you can copy those exact sizes into InDesign. So now let's get started with the poster. For InDesign you need to figure out how big your poster should be. In this case we will make an A0 poster. You find the dimensions of the paper for example on wikipedia. I will have a link in the description below. Now let's go back to InDesign and in here we create a new document. This one should be of cause for print. In this case we don't need facing pages and one page is enough. The paper size should be A0 this is not in here, so we need to type in the values. Double check that those values are correct. Next we could set up the column but we will do this later. However the margins we can already set those up in here. Those will be the space between the actual poster and the space to the border of the paper. So in this case 25mm should be fine. If you are working with inches and things like that you can also write them in here and ad the uni inch. And InDesign will convert those automatically to your default unit. We can click on OK. And the first thing you want to do is to save this document. I always like to add a version one, version two and so on so I have always backups of the original files. We click on save. I have prepared as I have recommended in a video before a little draft. So we can import this in here. This is just a picture I took. Normally you don't need to import this but for you so you can follow along I will put it in here as well. So this is the basic layout of the poster. You see here I want to have a 3 column layout with the main projects. We also want to lock this layer and create a new one. And the poster itself if about the GeneStream project This will be a project were 4 PhD students will be working on to get their Dr degree. And I will be one of them. So the main goal of the poster is to introduce the project it self to show our project leader and also our project partners and give a little introduction. And then to introduce each project in quite some detail and also the person who is mainly working on this project. Then of cause we have a link to the website and acknowledgements. As we have a 3 column layout we should insert some lines in here. And we can do this under [Layout] -> [Margins and Columns. ] And in this case we would like to have 3 like this. And the gutter, so the spacing between those should be 2 cm. well, maybe 15 mm (spacing) is already enough. We can change those things later on. Click on OK. And here we have our basic layout. If you would have a more classical poster like this one here We actually would have a 5 column layout so those would be 2 columns and this one here 3 to give it a nice layout. In this case the materials and methods and the background should not take the main space of the poster this is more result oriented and for the discussion and conclusion. But in this case we will go with a 3 column layout. and we can start to insert a background. So we make sure that those are snapping nicely to the edges. In this case we have under [view] -> [grids and guides]. the smart guides activated, so this way everything snaps into place at certain ancerpoints. We can select this one here this is just a box. And we give in a nice color. Let's switch this one to RGB. And let's select maybe a nice blue. In this case this is for the border, so we switch it. So maybe something like this is fine for now. We can go to this layer and lock this one as well. And we put it for now into the background. Now we can add some text in here. So therefore we need a new layer. This will be our text layer, we put it on top. And we just start to drag out some text boxes. In this case this will be for the main headline. Then we will have a sub headline and also an area for the main authors. And also some contact information. Let's hide our draft for the moment and zoom in and write some text. For the headline I would recommend a text size of around 100-90 pt. And we change the font and we can make this bold. In this case I would increase the text size. This should be fine for now. At this point you don't need to vorry to much about this things. We can always change it later. Next we have this one here. In here you can add your authors. And you see now the font is changed again so to avoid this, we want a consistent fond across the whole poster. We should define a standard font in here. We click on the paragraph styles. Click on this one "NEW" and we name it "font". I'n this one we go on edit and go on basic character formats. And in here we set the font "myriad pro". Click on OK. And the headline, we can also create a new paragraph style for this one. Call this one headline. And if we go on edit we can make this one based on font. So it will always have the font that I set in the paragraph style "Font". For the authors and people to respond to maybe a text size of 50 pt is quite nice. Now I would think we should increase the size a little bit so all names do fit one here. Like this. And actually the Green on the Blue is not very nice to look at so let's change the color in here. We can double click on this and change the color for example to Red. Also you might want to change the names in here. So this will be our text Layer, and the rest is fine for now. Of cause we also want to define this one as a new paragraph style as well. Now we also need a sub headline. And for now this can be the same size. We will tweak those things later on. Let's arrange them how they would be on the final poster more or less. And over here there should be a small logo. So we put a box as a placeholder in here as well. And for figures and logos you should always use a separate layer, to keep everything organised. Like this. And if you want to move something to a new Layer, just drag an drop. Yes, this is unfortunately Green again. So we double click and change the color on this as well. We can also place a placeholder in here for a little university logo. Let's increase the size again. And now we need to redefine the style. This way the changes are applied to this paragraph style. If we now take a look at our draft we see that we have kind of a figure in here and also we want to have a small abstract. So in this case we can hide it again. And we first going to create a new layer and this one will be for text boxes. And this one can stay Green. So now we're going to create a basic text box. This will be for the introduction. And you might want to give this one another color. For example a nice orange to make it more visible. We can change all of those things later on. And for now we don't have a border. The really nice thing about InDesign is that you can give boxes very nice corners. So in here we can for example set 15 mm and we change the corner style of the box to round. This way it does get round corners on each side. Let's take a look at this in preview. Maybe we can increase this to 20 mm also. But those are details you can always change later on. Next we want to have our placeholder. This will be the pyramid thing That we put in here, a picture like this. Of cause we should move this one to the figures layer. Actually let's change the color of this one to maybe a dark Blue, jup. Next we can copy this one here. And have some informations about the project coordinator. And we can give this one maybe a nice blue. That is a little bit darker than the background. Maybe like this. Of cause you should make sure it is in text boxes. On the side there will be more information about the project it self. So some ext saying that we have 4 PhD projects and that they will be explained below and that all projects are quite interconnected. Next we can place our projects. By the way I am copying those things by pressing [ALT] when I drop it. And we can just give this one a nice size. We need some space down here for later. But this should be fine for now. Below here we need another text box. This one will be for the project website. And then we need another box for acknowledgements and all the project partners. Let's also add some space for pictures. We go to the Figure / Logos layer. And in here we just drag out some boxes. So here I would take a picture of every person that is responsible. And also we want to have nice picture for each project. We should make sure that those have a good size, so the border between the picture it self and the side of this box should be 10 mm, so let's zoom in in here. And we make sure that this one is right aligned, so it has the right size. So this is the width. And we're going to copy this and subtract 20 mm So instead of a 5 we have here 3. Now this box has the right size. We can now centre it in the middle. This is done by smart guides. And here we will have our picture in the end. We can also copy this one. The only thing that is missing now is the main text and to enter those you could do two things you can select the type tool and clicking one of those frames, to convert ti to an object where you can type in. However we're not going to do this right now. Instead we're going to switch the layer to text. And in this case we will drag a new text box above this layer. Because if we type in here the rounded corners will screw up our text layout. So we create a new text box and have this one on top. We don't need to worry to much about the alignment at this point. However what I would do now is go on text frame options and in here put a spacing of 10 mm on each side. Like this. And in here we will have our abstract. So the headline for example should be maybe the same size for now as our main authors. And then the basic text should be around 30 pt. In this case we're going to create a new style and call this one "basic text". We can now copy this one for all our boxes. I will take now some time to do some fine tuning and to add some text. You can add pictures, by just selecting them and dragging them into InDesign. Just click and hold to give it the right size. We can also put pictures directly into empty boxes. Like this. If you want to resize or manipulate the fitting of the pictures you can do this with those things here. Resizing it self can be done by double clicking in here and now you see it's Yellow around and by holding the shift key you will make sure that you don't change the proportions of the picture. All right I will do some layout stuff and we see us back in a few minutes. I find it always difficult to get the colors right so a good trick is to go to google docs and in here you have very nice colors. And we're going to take a screen shot of this we press [cmd]+[Shift]+[4] and we can select just these colors here. And then drop them into InDesign. We can put them on the side and select a nice color using the eye dropper tool. So we have here a nicer blue. We can also add some layout guides, but we want to put those on a separate layer. Let's call this one guides. And now we can from here just drag them down like this. And we clock them. This way we can align our objects on the same height. Like this. You might want to change the distances from the headlines and the normal text, and we can do this over here. We can maybe set this one to 7 mmm. like this. Or maybe 5 mm is already enough. And we want to redefine this over here. All right, here the basic layout is done. And now it's time to push this first idea to the other people who are working on this poster and to get some feedback and also some more text in it. I have changed some things. I did set the roundness on these boxes to 15 mm. And I also added some paragraph styles, some new ones for the figure descriptions. This one has the text size 24 pt. Poster Printing: How it’s Done

So this is a quick video to take you through some of the basics of scientific posters So, a few things to know about posters. They should be visually attractive. They are usually something you, or academics, would do at conferences. They are often up on the walls, or on boards around the room. People mill around and they pick out the ones they want to talk more about, so they need to be reasonably eye-catching. They should be concise. You will have a limited amount of space that you need to get something, which might be a whole study, on. So you need to think carefully about the most important information. They need to be clear. You need people to be able to see some detail from a fair way away, so they want to have a further look at it. Nevertheless, they need to be academic and formal. So they still need to follow some of the requirements that your other reports or essays also follow. In terms of them being written in good, clear English and grammatically correct. And also sometimes following some of the conventions of how you title and layout some of the information. So, this is an example of a decent layout. So you can see we've got the title clearly at the start. It follows a similar kind of pattern that your reports might do, so your lab reports. So we still have an abstract, there's an introduction, you might have a table or a materials and methods section. You've still got results and conclusions There's figures in there as well, and they are often the best way to get information across clearly and quickly, and make it look visually attractive. and you'll notice at the bottom that there are references. So, even though this is a poster, you still need those references. Still using Harvard APA referencing system, as well. So, a few things to think about type and colour. So, it's nice to have a colour background, but I would say that it needs to be a muted one. So not something that's too strong, but something where you still have a contrast between the typed word and the background. But that said, it is nicer than a white background, because it is more eye-catching and sometimes it is easier to read. Also, making sure you don't over-clutter your poster. So leave some clear space. Also, thinking in terms of making sure that things follow a kind of logical progression. So, if I briefly go back to this layout, people tend to read from left to right, and top to bottom. So that's why we've got the title at the top, then abstract, introduction, and then go to the other side to read the results and conclusion, so it follows a logical order. And you can see here, there is still clear space. Also use a sans serif font. It basically means use a clear font that doesn't have too many fancy bits on it. So, anything that looks like handwriting, or old fashioned type, can be quite difficult to read. So, sticking to something like Calibri, or Arial, or something like that. Obviously, making some things obvious. So, your big title, you might want to be 90pt. Section headings 32-36 pt, main body 22-28pt. So fairly big type, as well. Which also underlines why you need to be quite concise in what you are writing. Also, we'd recommend 1. 5 to double line spacing. So you are leaving a decent amount of space between the lines, which again makes it easier to read on a poster. A few little bits about labelling. You definitely want figures on a poster, you don't want it all to be written text. You need something eye-catching and interesting to look at. So you may have figures, graphs, photographs, tables of information. They all need to be labelled, as well. And they all need to do something, too. A figure legend, as it says here, will go at the foot of the image. But also, you have that figure legend in there, saying Figure 1, so you can refer to it in the text. So they should be in there for a reason, and they should be helping to illustrate something that you are actually saying. So you don't want little bits of clip art, or photographs, in there for the sake of it. They should be related to what you are saying. Same with something like a table. So if you have got a list of results to want to give, putting it in a table may be better. They need to be labelled at the top, as this one is, and everything needs a title, as this does as well. So, probably the best way of illustrating this is to show you a few things. So this, for example, is a example of a not very good poster. So you can see that the two pictures there, the two figures, don't have any title. They don't have any legend. So, I'm not convinced that the person who has put them in is actually going to speak about them in the text. The title isn't very clear because they've used some kind of weird word art, so if you were standing far away from it, you might be able to make out Gobi Desert, but maybe not the first couple of words. It's got quite a distracting border around it. It's got a very dark background, and then the actual text is on different colours which is a bit confusing and sometimes means the contrast isn't very good, particularly in the Methods section and the Results section, where the background is quite dark. Also, things aren't quite in order. So you've got the Abstract, but then you've got a figure in the way You've got the Introduction, but for some reason it's followed by the References. You've got the Methods and the Results, but the Methods are really big, and the Results are really small. And then you've got the Discussion and Conclusions kind of shoved towards the end. So it would be much better to have it in columns, justified with each other, so you can make out what section is doing what. That's in comparison to this one, which is much better. It isn't perfect, it could be more interesting, but it is a lot clearer. So, we've got a fairly muted background, a surround which isn't too distracting. The title is clear, it could maybe be a bit clearer, it could be a bit bolder. But you can see that everything is justified. We've got the Abstract, the Introduction and the Methods, so it follows a logical path. We've got some figures in the middle which are labelled and have titles. So we'll assume they are going to talk about it in the text. And then we've got Results, Discussion and Conclusions, and References at the end. So it follows a kind of logical path, you can follow it through from left to right and top to bottom. So, things to check about your posters. Is the format clear? Does it follow a logical path? Are your diagrams, figures and graphs reasonably clear? Are they titled? Can you see at least some detail on them from far away, so they are attractive? Is the text clear? Have you used a reasonably sized font, so is the main body at least 22pt? Have you left at least 1. 5 to double line spacing? And, you yourself, if you put that up on the wall and step away from it, is it eye-catching? Is it something that would make you think 'right, I want to go and read that further'. Each panel provides a breakdown of requiredand elective courses as well as the courses that had a main focus on medical communications,courses that contained a related component, and courses that did not provide sufficientinformation to make a determination. For more information on how these categorieswere defined and the limitations of this analysis, refer to our full poster. We identified a total of 65 possibly-relatedmedical communications courses among 27 MD, 17 DNP, and 13 PharmD programs. Among MD courses, 11 out of 30 possibly-relatedmedical communications courses were required in their respective programs; however, only1 course, an elective, had medical communications as a main focus. Among DNP courses, 14 out of 17 possibly-relatedmedical communications courses were required; however, only 1 of the required courses hadmedical communications as a main focus. All 3 elective courses had medical communicationsas a main focus. Among PharmD courses, 3 out of 18 possibly-relatedmedical communications courses were required for PharmD students; however only 1 course,an elective, had medical communications as a main focus. Across all 3 degree types, the MD programswe analyzed offered more possibly-related medical communications courses. The DNP programs offered more required coursesthan electives, whereas the MD and PharmD programs favored elective exposure to medicalcommunications. Figure 3 displays types of exposure to thepossibly-related medical communications courses we were able to identify among the top-rankedMD (research), DNP, and PharmD programs. Rankings are according to US News & WorldReport. We categorized the courses based on whetherthey had a main focus on medical communications or, if they contained a related component,we further divided the courses based on what components they contained. Courses that contained multiple componentsare counted more than once among these categories. For more information on how these categorieswere defined and the limitations of this analysis, refer to our full poster. We identified a total of 65 possibly-relatedmedical communications courses among 27 MD, 17 DNP, and 13 PharmD programs. The 38 courses we were able to categorizeare displayed in this figure. Displayed on the left side of the figure,we were able to identify only 6 courses, 4 of which were from DNP programs, across all3 degree types that offered medical communications as a main focus, while 32 courses had medicalcommunications as a component. As shown on the right side of the figure,16 of 32 courses involved related lecture topics, 30 of 32 involved writing opportunities,and 10 of 32 involved publishing opportunities. PharmD programs stood out in this section,with 10 courses involving related lecture topics and 13 courses offering a writing opportunity;however, only 1 PharmD course mentioned the opportunity to publish. MD programs, on the other hand, seem to favorthe “learn by doing” approach, as only 2 courses involved exposure to medical communicationsthrough lecture topics, while 11 courses involved writing opportunities and 6 mentioned theopportunity to publish. In our poster titled, “Medical CommunicationsExposure and Education Among Medical, Nursing, and Pharmacy Students,” we report on thecurricula of the top medical, nursing, and pharmacy schools in the United States to determinethe extent of medical communications and medical writing exposure among graduate students inthe healthcare professions. See the video description below for a linkto our full poster. The map in Figure 1 displays the locationsof the top-ranked MD (research), DNP, and PharmD programs, according to US News & WorldReport. The table in the lower left corner summarizesthe number of schools by degree type and geographical region as defined by the US Census Bureau. Enrollment sizes are shown to the right ofthe map, according to US News & World Report and the StartClass website. All degree types were represented within allregions; however, most of the schools were more concentrated in the east half of thecountry. The highest enrollment was found among MDprograms. Of the schools included here, all 27 MD schools,18 of the 25 DNP schools, and 21 of the 29 PharmD schools provided published curriculaand we were able to identify 27 MD, 17 DNP, and 13 PharmD programs with at least 1 possibly-relatedmedical communications course. The scientific poster needs to begripping so you have to focus on what your key message is and make sure youput that clearly in your title. The key message or the key tips that I would give is to really pay attention not to have unnecessary words on theposter. Minimise the text, focus on the graphics, and introduce graphics that areeasy to understand. So you clearly want to have one graphic, for example, which outlines the design of the study, the methodology that you're utilising andthen followed of course by graphics that convey the scientific results. You alsoneed to have some text that describes the main conclusions from your projectand the take-home messages. The take-home messages need to be clearly visualised and clearly described for them to be taken up by your listeners. In additionto this when you're presenting your poster to a listener you want to makesure that you assess the expertise level of your listener, so that youcan tailor your delivery to the person that's standing in front of you. Youdon't want to give the same level of details, for example, to somebody whoalready knows a bit about the topic because you will disinterest him and atthe same time for somebody who is completely unaware of the research areayou're in, you need to provide a little bit more explanation so that they'reable to follow the work that you've carried out. So often the most excitingscience because it's unpublished is covered in posters.

BIMBI IROM: We're goingto do a peer review workshop, all right? Not peer-- review workshopof scientific posters, OK? And we're going to use the samerubric that's there for you, for your work. They were dividedinto groups, and they had to make aposter presentation of on a scientific topic. And they had to describe theprocess for a lay audience and why that posterwas important, or why the processwas important. So on that particularday, we used that as a workshop for them todo a peer review of posters that I brought in from outside. We put up the posterand the rubric together, and each group hadto judge the poster. You have to assign a number-- anumerical grade assessment, OK? For each category. You look at the headings. You look at the spacing. You look at the[? statistics. ?] You look at the color schema. You look at the clarityof the information. You look at how the posterwas structured in such a way that the reader couldeasily go from step one, to two, to three,to four, to five. And if that wasn'thappening, then they had to offer a critique. And they had to givea justification. So it was important, too, forthem to pay attention and say, OK. Why are we, as a group, givingposter number 1 a 5 out of 10, in terms of aesthetics, orcolor schema, or spacing, or structure? The point was thatthey would take away the lessons of theworkshop or the peer review back to when theyare actually starting to design those posters. And the interestingthing was that this was the same rubric thatwas going to be used for the assignment, itself. So they had tolook at the poster through the lens ofthe rubric, right? So it kind of forces them toengage with the rubric itself, and see what is it thatI, as the instructor, am asking them to do. And it's one way ofdoing it stealthily. Because if you ask themto read the rubric, I would assume not manypeople would actually sit down and read the rubric,until their grades are bad. Right? And then they comerunning back to you and say, why did I get this? Or why did I receivethis grade, that grade? So it was serving acouple of purposes-- one, engaging with the tech itself,making them use the tech productively, makingthem use the rubric, making them pay attentionto what I was looking for, and so that they can stepup their game, so to say.

Active Learning Example: Scientific Poster Review

Hello everyone, and welcome to the new inDesign tutorial series. In this series I will be teaching you how to make academic posters with InDesign CS6. If you go to conferences as a scientist or engineer you often need to bring your own poster to present your research. I think most people don't really enjoy making posters so if you look at posters on the internet or on conferences where you are going most of the times it's just a big wall of text and not very nice to look at. So I want you to remember that posters are something visual. So in this tutorial I will not only talk about how to get the right amount of text but also how to get a very nice flow and layout and also how to use figures and graphics to make your poster very attractive. If you need to make a poster for a conference I really hope you see this as an opportunity to design something, to create something, to be a little bit of an artist. Even if you are a scientist, I think every one can have a lot of fun making a poster and it's great if it looks very nice in the end. Because a great poster will also help to also promote your research. So in this course I will be helping you to make a great poster. But before we start making the poster I want you to consider some key things before you open up InDesign. First of all you should really figure out who is attending the conference. It is a very specialised conference on e. G. neuro science or a particular group of organisms? Or has the conference a very broad field? So depending on that you will have some experts from your field or you will have general students of professors from other fields as well and you need to adjust the style and information in your posters accordingly. So if the conference is for a general audience, you want to keep it very simple and don't use special terms that only people from your field are using. Secondly figure out the actual dimensions of your poster. On conferences you get only one specific wall, where you can put your poster on and if your poster is to big you will not be able to hang it on your poster wall. So usually posters are in A1 or A0 and also think about if the poster needs to be in landscape or if it can be in the normal orientation. You will find those informations on the conference website or if you apply for a conference. Now as you know the size and orientation of your poster it's really important that you make a draft so take out a pice of paper and make a rough sketch with what you want to put on your poster and also what sections you want to have. Like introduction, materials and methods and how much space they should take on your poster. Normally the results section should have the biggest space on the poster. And as we are making a poster in this tutorial as well I have done this for the poster we will make. So you should have an idea what your layout should look like and what contents should go on your poster. It's really key here to concentrate your research to the most important points only, because if you don't do this you will end up with a wall of text. Also try to keep it to 300 words total on your poster if you end up with 400, well thats all right but if you really go above 400 you need to scrape something away. So really try here to aim for 300 words and don't forget that the poster should be a lot move visual and not written like a thesis with a lot of words. Now as you have figured out what you want to put on your poster you should also discuss it with your supervisor. And then one last important point is that you should not worry to much about details now. The first step is as we have our draft, to get our text and figures into InDesign. To get a basic overview if our layout idea works and how everything looks together. And then we can work on the details and polish the poster and really choose the right font size, choose the right font and so on, work on all the edges. So make sure to get the contend on the poster first and then tweak all the layout things and make everything look nice. Posters at the Capitol is an opportunity for undergraduate students who have undertaken research projects mentored by faculty to show off their work, to show it off in a very public location, and to show it off in a location where the money that often supports those projects comes from, the legislature. It’s always nice to have some kind of recognition when you put this kind of time and effort into a project. Doing research with the University of Louisville as an undergrad has been a great opportunity for me. The fact that I have gotten to work so closely with other students, professors in the biology department and it’s been a great talking piece for applying to graduate schools as well. This event is to call attention to the legislators, to the importance of undergraduate research, to the overall curriculum, and it’s for their support for undergraduate curriculum and also for research. It’s also important to engage students in research because it helps with retention and graduation rates. Research has been a great opportunity and like I’ve said it’s been a lot of fun, I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s definitely made my career as an undergrad better all around.

Hello every one! Today we will continue working on our poster. And I would recommend if you have a department at your University to also take a look at posters that other people made. And especially take a look at the text sizes and pick a poster were you like the text size, and the spacing and the general layout. I would also recommend to take a ruler and actually measure the text size and also the distances between the objects. SO you can copy those exact sizes into InDesign. So now let's get started with the poster. For InDesign you need to figure out how big your poster should be. In this case we will make an A0 poster. You find the dimensions of the paper for example on wikipedia. I will have a link in the description below. Now let's go back to InDesign and in here we create a new document. This one should be of cause for print. In this case we don't need facing pages and one page is enough. The paper size should be A0 this is not in here, so we need to type in the values. Double check that those values are correct. Next we could set up the column but we will do this later. However the margins we can already set those up in here. Those will be the space between the actual poster and the space to the border of the paper. So in this case 25mm should be fine. If you are working with inches and things like that you can also write them in here and ad the uni inch. And InDesign will convert those automatically to your default unit. We can click on OK. And the first thing you want to do is to save this document. I always like to add a version one, version two and so on so I have always backups of the original files. We click on save. I have prepared as I have recommended in a video before a little draft. So we can import this in here. This is just a picture I took. Normally you don't need to import this but for you so you can follow along I will put it in here as well. So this is the basic layout of the poster. You see here I want to have a 3 column layout with the main projects. We also want to lock this layer and create a new one. And the poster itself if about the GeneStream project This will be a project were 4 PhD students will be working on to get their Dr degree. And I will be one of them. So the main goal of the poster is to introduce the project it self to show our project leader and also our project partners and give a little introduction. And then to introduce each project in quite some detail and also the person who is mainly working on this project. Then of cause we have a link to the website and acknowledgements. As we have a 3 column layout we should insert some lines in here. And we can do this under [Layout] -> [Margins and Columns. ] And in this case we would like to have 3 like this. And the gutter, so the spacing between those should be 2 cm. well, maybe 15 mm (spacing) is already enough. We can change those things later on. Click on OK. And here we have our basic layout. If you would have a more classical poster like this one here We actually would have a 5 column layout so those would be 2 columns and this one here 3 to give it a nice layout. In this case the materials and methods and the background should not take the main space of the poster this is more result oriented and for the discussion and conclusion. But in this case we will go with a 3 column layout. and we can start to insert a background. So we make sure that those are snapping nicely to the edges. In this case we have under [view] -> [grids and guides]. the smart guides activated, so this way everything snaps into place at certain ancerpoints. We can select this one here this is just a box. And we give in a nice color. Let's switch this one to RGB. And let's select maybe a nice blue. In this case this is for the border, so we switch it. So maybe something like this is fine for now. We can go to this layer and lock this one as well. And we put it for now into the background. Now we can add some text in here. So therefore we need a new layer. This will be our text layer, we put it on top. And we just start to drag out some text boxes. In this case this will be for the main headline. Then we will have a sub headline and also an area for the main authors. And also some contact information. Let's hide our draft for the moment and zoom in and write some text. For the headline I would recommend a text size of around 100-90 pt. And we change the font and we can make this bold. In this case I would increase the text size. This should be fine for now. At this point you don't need to vorry to much about this things. We can always change it later. Next we have this one here. In here you can add your authors. And you see now the font is changed again so to avoid this, we want a consistent fond across the whole poster. We should define a standard font in here. We click on the paragraph styles. Click on this one "NEW" and we name it "font". I'n this one we go on edit and go on basic character formats. And in here we set the font "myriad pro". Click on OK. And the headline, we can also create a new paragraph style for this one. Call this one headline. And if we go on edit we can make this one based on font. So it will always have the font that I set in the paragraph style "Font". For the authors and people to respond to maybe a text size of 50 pt is quite nice. Now I would think we should increase the size a little bit so all names do fit one here. Like this. And actually the Green on the Blue is not very nice to look at so let's change the color in here. We can double click on this and change the color for example to Red. Also you might want to change the names in here. So this will be our text Layer, and the rest is fine for now. Of cause we also want to define this one as a new paragraph style as well. Now we also need a sub headline. And for now this can be the same size. We will tweak those things later on. Let's arrange them how they would be on the final poster more or less. And over here there should be a small logo. So we put a box as a placeholder in here as well. And for figures and logos you should always use a separate layer, to keep everything organised. Like this. And if you want to move something to a new Layer, just drag an drop. Yes, this is unfortunately Green again. So we double click and change the color on this as well. We can also place a placeholder in here for a little university logo. Let's increase the size again. And now we need to redefine the style. This way the changes are applied to this paragraph style. If we now take a look at our draft we see that we have kind of a figure in here and also we want to have a small abstract. So in this case we can hide it again. And we first going to create a new layer and this one will be for text boxes. And this one can stay Green. So now we're going to create a basic text box. This will be for the introduction. And you might want to give this one another color. For example a nice orange to make it more visible. We can change all of those things later on. And for now we don't have a border. The really nice thing about InDesign is that you can give boxes very nice corners. So in here we can for example set 15 mm and we change the corner style of the box to round. This way it does get round corners on each side. Let's take a look at this in preview. Maybe we can increase this to 20 mm also. But those are details you can always change later on. Next we want to have our placeholder. This will be the pyramid thing That we put in here, a picture like this. Of cause we should move this one to the figures layer. Actually let's change the color of this one to maybe a dark Blue, jup. Next we can copy this one here. And have some informations about the project coordinator. And we can give this one maybe a nice blue. That is a little bit darker than the background. Maybe like this. Of cause you should make sure it is in text boxes. On the side there will be more information about the project it self. So some ext saying that we have 4 PhD projects and that they will be explained below and that all projects are quite interconnected. Next we can place our projects. By the way I am copying those things by pressing [ALT] when I drop it. And we can just give this one a nice size. We need some space down here for later. But this should be fine for now. Below here we need another text box. This one will be for the project website. And then we need another box for acknowledgements and all the project partners. Let's also add some space for pictures. We go to the Figure / Logos layer. And in here we just drag out some boxes. So here I would take a picture of every person that is responsible. And also we want to have nice picture for each project. We should make sure that those have a good size, so the border between the picture it self and the side of this box should be 10 mm, so let's zoom in in here. And we make sure that this one is right aligned, so it has the right size. So this is the width. And we're going to copy this and subtract 20 mm So instead of a 5 we have here 3. Now this box has the right size. We can now centre it in the middle. This is done by smart guides. And here we will have our picture in the end. We can also copy this one. The only thing that is missing now is the main text and to enter those you could do two things you can select the type tool and clicking one of those frames, to convert ti to an object where you can type in. However we're not going to do this right now. Instead we're going to switch the layer to text. And in this case we will drag a new text box above this layer. Because if we type in here the rounded corners will screw up our text layout. So we create a new text box and have this one on top. We don't need to worry to much about the alignment at this point. However what I would do now is go on text frame options and in here put a spacing of 10 mm on each side. Like this. And in here we will have our abstract. So the headline for example should be maybe the same size for now as our main authors. And then the basic text should be around 30 pt. In this case we're going to create a new style and call this one "basic text". We can now copy this one for all our boxes. I will take now some time to do some fine tuning and to add some text. You can add pictures, by just selecting them and dragging them into InDesign. Just click and hold to give it the right size. We can also put pictures directly into empty boxes. Like this. If you want to resize or manipulate the fitting of the pictures you can do this with those things here. Resizing it self can be done by double clicking in here and now you see it's Yellow around and by holding the shift key you will make sure that you don't change the proportions of the picture. All right I will do some layout stuff and we see us back in a few minutes. I find it always difficult to get the colors right so a good trick is to go to google docs and in here you have very nice colors. And we're going to take a screen shot of this we press [cmd]+[Shift]+[4] and we can select just these colors here. And then drop them into InDesign. We can put them on the side and select a nice color using the eye dropper tool. So we have here a nicer blue. We can also add some layout guides, but we want to put those on a separate layer. Let's call this one guides. And now we can from here just drag them down like this. And we clock them. This way we can align our objects on the same height. Like this. You might want to change the distances from the headlines and the normal text, and we can do this over here. We can maybe set this one to 7 mmm. like this. Or maybe 5 mm is already enough. And we want to redefine this over here. All right, here the basic layout is done. And now it's time to push this first idea to the other people who are working on this poster and to get some feedback and also some more text in it. I have changed some things. I did set the roundness on these boxes to 15 mm. And I also added some paragraph styles, some new ones for the figure descriptions. This one has the text size 24 pt. I will keep worrying on this poster and I will show you further results in one of the next videos. So you can click here and watch that video. Bye bye. So this is a quick video to take you through some of the basics of scientific posters So, a few things to know about posters. They should be visually attractive. They are usually something you, or academics, would do at conferences. They are often up on the walls, or on boards around the room. People mill around and they pick out the ones they want to talk more about, so they need to be reasonably eye-catching. They should be concise. You will have a limited amount of space that you need to get something, which might be a whole study, on. So you need to think carefully about the most important information. They need to be clear. You need people to be able to see some detail from a fair way away, so they want to have a further look at it. Nevertheless, they need to be academic and formal. So they still need to follow some of the requirements that your other reports or essays also follow. In terms of them being written in good, clear English and grammatically correct. And also sometimes following some of the conventions of how you title and layout some of the information. So, this is an example of a decent layout. So you can see we've got the title clearly at the start. It follows a similar kind of pattern that your reports might do, so your lab reports. So we still have an abstract, there's an introduction, you might have a table or a materials and methods section. You've still got results and conclusions There's figures in there as well, and they are often the best way to get information across clearly and quickly, and make it look visually attractive. and you'll notice at the bottom that there are references. So, even though this is a poster, you still need those references. Still using Harvard APA referencing system, as well. So, a few things to think about type and colour. So, it's nice to have a colour background, but I would say that it needs to be a muted one. So not something that's too strong, but something where you still have a contrast between the typed word and the background. But that said, it is nicer than a white background, because it is more eye-catching and sometimes it is easier to read. Also, making sure you don't over-clutter your poster. So leave some clear space. Also, thinking in terms of making sure that things follow a kind of logical progression. So, if I briefly go back to this layout, people tend to read from left to right, and top to bottom. So that's why we've got the title at the top, then abstract, introduction, and then go to the other side to read the results and conclusion, so it follows a logical order. And you can see here, there is still clear space. Also use a sans serif font. It basically means use a clear font that doesn't have too many fancy bits on it. So, anything that looks like handwriting, or old fashioned type, can be quite difficult to read. So, sticking to something like Calibri, or Arial, or something like that. Obviously, making some things obvious. So, your big title, you might want to be 90pt. Section headings 32-36 pt, main body 22-28pt. So fairly big type, as well. Which also underlines why you need to be quite concise in what you are writing. Also, we'd recommend 1. 5 to double line spacing. So you are leaving a decent amount of space between the lines, which again makes it easier to read on a poster. A few little bits about labelling. You definitely want figures on a poster, you don't want it all to be written text. You need something eye-catching and interesting to look at. So you may have figures, graphs, photographs, tables of information. They all need to be labelled, as well. And they all need to do something, too. A figure legend, as it says here, will go at the foot of the image. But also, you have that figure legend in there, saying Figure 1, so you can refer to it in the text. So they should be in there for a reason, and they should be helping to illustrate something that you are actually saying. So you don't want little bits of clip art, or photographs, in there for the sake of it. They should be related to what you are saying. Same with something like a table. So if you have got a list of results to want to give, putting it in a table may be better. They need to be labelled at the top, as this one is, and everything needs a title, as this does as well. So, probably the best way of illustrating this is to show you a few things. So this, for example, is a example of a not very good poster. So you can see that the two pictures there, the two figures, don't have any title. They don't have any legend. So, I'm not convinced that the person who has put them in is actually going to speak about them in the text. The title isn't very clear because they've used some kind of weird word art, so if you were standing far away from it, you might be able to make out Gobi Desert, but maybe not the first couple of words. It's got quite a distracting border around it. It's got a very dark background, and then the actual text is on different colours which is a bit confusing and sometimes means the contrast isn't very good, particularly in the Methods section and the Results section, where the background is quite dark. Also, things aren't quite in order. So you've got the Abstract, but then you've got a figure in the way You've got the Introduction, but for some reason it's followed by the References. You've got the Methods and the Results, but the Methods are really big, and the Results are really small. And then you've got the Discussion and Conclusions kind of shoved towards the end. So it would be much better to have it in columns, justified with each other, so you can make out what section is doing what. That's in comparison to this one, which is much better. It isn't perfect, it could be more interesting, but it is a lot clearer. So, we've got a fairly muted background, a surround which isn't too distracting. The title is clear, it could maybe be a bit clearer, it could be a bit bolder. But you can see that everything is justified. We've got the Abstract, the Introduction and the Methods, so it follows a logical path. We've got some figures in the middle which are labelled and have titles. So we'll assume they are going to talk about it in the text. And then we've got Results, Discussion and Conclusions, and References at the end. So it follows a kind of logical path, you can follow it through from left to right and top to bottom. So, things to check about your posters. Is the format clear? Does it follow a logical path? Are your diagrams, figures and graphs reasonably clear? Are they titled? Can you see at least some detail on them from far away, so they are attractive? Is the text clear? Have you used a reasonably sized font, so is the main body at least 22pt? Have you left at least 1. 5 to double line spacing? And, you yourself, if you put that up on the wall and step away from it, is it eye-catching? Is it something that would make you think 'right, I want to go and read that further'. All right every one, before we get started designing ur own poster with InDesign I want to show you some posters I made over the years in my studies as a biologist. Here we go with the posters. The poster you see here is the very first poster I made and this is really just this typical wall of text that you see so often. Every one just tries to get as much information on the poster as they can but on a conference no one will stand in front on a poster and read it for 10 minutes. Also you see here that the edge to the border of the paper is not very big. So, actually when I printed this thing and put it into the frame on the wall of our department it was cutting some text on the edges, because the frame was overlapping. So make sure you have also some distance from your text and the border. Also make sure that the color is really emphasizing something important. In this case here the color is emphasizing on something that is more background information and not really your own result. But your poster, it's your poster / your research and you should pitch your results to the person who is looking at your poster, and not some "boring" background information. The next poster was part of my bachelor thesis. As you can see in this poster, putting boxes around your text can give your poster a little bit more structure. However the layout on this poster is still very tight, there is not a lot of (free) space. And if you look clotser you will spot some small arrows that are pointing to the next box you should read. If your poster layout needs arrows to give the reader a guide which panel to read next, your layout is probably not very good. So the poster should have a natural flow and should be self explaining which way it should be read. I also think text wise this is still a little bit to much and you should cut down on the information. Here you see a poster from my bachelor thesis again. this one I made a few years later as part of an English course. And as you can see here, the amount of text is a lot less and also the bars on the side give the poster a nice structure and flow. So it's not confusing, you know where to start reading and which way to go. Actually I stole this poster idea pretty much from another poster. But thats not a big problem, because I think design is always redesign. Look at some posters and get inspired and just take the best parts from each poster for your own poster. At the end of the day, it wont look one to one the same you always will have your own style a little bit in there. I also want to point out that you have a picture of your organism which is always nice, because people might not be familiar with the organism in this case its some fungi on the anthers of the flower (the black dust). And then in the material and methods, you have a nice flow chart which makes it really easy to explain to your viewers what you actually did. And then the most emphasize is of cause on your results. And also the graph here is keep very very simple. And you have a map, which shows some population structure. So with a poster like this, it's really easy to explain the results of your work. This poster I made in my time in Sweden in a group project with some other people where we were working on sustainability. And actually I really like this poster because its very simple. We brought this poster to a conference and it was really nice to discuss the poster in front of people because you have only very little text and a few pictures so it's not overwhelming, it's very clear. And you can point out the important thing of your project very well with the pictures. So it's easy to pitch the main idea to the people who are interested in your poster. Whoever this really depends on the topic you want to present because if you have some scientific experiments and things like this you also need to include some background information and material and methods things. So in this case it was just a (small) project we were working on, not so much data more like a concept on a project that could be implemented in schools to get kids reconnected to nature. This next poster is also a little bit unconventional. This one is about a concept in developed for sustainability to visualise the main idea of sustainability in another way. I actually never had the chance to show this off somewhere but I think still it's a nice layout, because it's not your traditional layout in columns. I mean columns give you a very nice structure. But if we see this poster compared to your standard posters on a conference I'm pretty confident that people get interested in the poster because it just looks different, it stands out. And standing out should also be a goal of your poster to get people interested. However this is kind of a difficult thing because it is scientific data you can't do it like this most of the time. This is more like a louse concept and you don't have the typical structure of your normal poster. But maybe keep in mind that you should have one eye catching element on you poster, even if it's traditionally organised. I always like to look at some info-graphics on the web. So if you do a quick search on google for info-graphics, you will find a lot of them. The funny thing about info-graphics is, they also present some information to you but usually people really like to read them, because they are prepared in a nice visual way. And this is incredibly difficult to really make also with your scientific data because scientific data is a lot of the times very complex. But if you manage to break down your data and make it even a little bit like a info-graphic, I think it will look very nice. So you could set your goal to make an poster that looks like an info-graphic, or even a movie poster or an ad. And if you keep those ideas and concepts in mind, while you're making your poster you poster hopefully will not look like an info-graphic but it also won't look like a boring poster with a lot of text in it. So it really is something in between which which I think is very appropriate for a scientific poster. So it will be visible in the mass of posters you find on conferences but it won't right jump at you in a very negative "too manny colors" way. This one is the latest poster I made, and I had it on two conferences in 2012. And one one I actually won a poster prize YAAAY! ; ) This one is presenting the results of my master thesis. And as you can see here, I have basically two main figures with the results so you really want to cut down on your results, and only show the most important key things. And other than that, it's a pretty standard poster with a two column layout and with a eye catching Dinocras cephalotes, the organism I worked with, on the side here. Also notice again, we have a flow chart for our methods. And one thing I like, the main question and some key conclusions so if someone walks by your poster, he can read the question; what was the goal of the research and then the conclusions what did they find out. And then decide if they are interested in reading the poster further. What is maybe bad about the poster that it's a little bit clouded, could be a little bit less text a little bit more free space and also not every one might be a big fan of the colorfulness of this poster. So with colors it's kind of up to you which colors you like. But don't overdo it with to much colors keep it very consistent with the layout and also the text, don't mix to much stuff. Actually the secret, why I think I won did win poster prize is on the corner right here. And actually as you are watching this video almost to the end, I shall give you another great tip how to win a poster prize. I went to two conferences where this hapend, it's quite funny. Because if you build a moddel of your organism this sounds very stupid, but like build an insect out of some paper or what ever and have it this size and just put it on your poster. Because this really helps your poster to stand out and on two conferences people who did this actually won a poster prize. So even if you don't study biology if you study physics or what not, you could build the star that you are working on of you could build a little house if you are an architect. just something that is sitting in front of your poster and this will really help your poster to stand out and I would say very likely help you win a poster prize. So if you are building something like this, make sure to send me a picture and tell me how it went on the conference. However, don't get to excited, don't get especially your hopes to high for conferences. Sometimes it really can happen that no one cares about your poste ror your topic and you just sit there for two hours and no one is talking to you. this pretty much hapend to one of my posters but then on the next conference I got a prize for it. But don't focus to much on those things, make a great poster because you enjoi doing it and because you think its fun to have a nice looking poster. All right I hope I was able to give you dome do's and dont's. We now going to get into much more detail when we are making the poster and I will point out all the little things you should take good care of. I have chosen to make a poster about how to make a poster, because I think this will help me personally to keep it to 300 words and tell you only the key things that you should really watch out for when you are making your poster. Because I could stay here for one more hour and tell you all the little details but in the end it's really important that the key points on your poster are right. However, I will also if I make a poster about scientific things, about my research again I will also talk about this a little bit more, so that you can also see what it is like to make a scientific poster about your research project. Because I think making a poster about your research, it's a little bit more difficult than making a poster about some arbitrary topic like "how to make a poster" or "what color is the sun" or what ever. But that’s the BEST case. Most of the time, you’re standing by your poster all eager. While people just walk by you and don’t even look at your poster, as if you don’t exist, while you try to like STARE THEM DOWN out of desperation.

Like, “Please, SOMEONE, RESPOND TO MY WORK. ” And then the whole hour the poster session goes by and no one has even — not even not just ENGAGED with your poster — but no one has LOOKED at your poster.

Then you just take your poster down, and you look at it, and you remember that it cost $100 to print. And then you throw it away.

In reality, most the time you walk in and there’s all these presenters standing thereby all their posters.

They’re like locking eyes with you and watching you as you pass because they’re all so bored and desperate for you to engage with them and like validate their research.

Having a Clean and Easy to Read Poster Design is Key

And their posters are just like walls of incomprehensible text that you can’t interpret very quickly.

So what you do is you kind of like avoid the too intense eye contact of the presenters while trying to quickly and surreptitiously scan the titles of the posters.

Trying to get an idea of one or two you might want to check out. And the title of the poster just sort of gives you a general idea of what the study did.

Like, the research question they asked. Not even the answer.

It’s kind of abstract and a little too technical, but if you can get the general idea, then maybe you engage with the poster, and try to get closer, and try to figure out what they did, and try to LEARN something.

So you found a poster that you’re kind of interested in and you walk up closer to get a general idea and scan it and read it and try to learn the core insight from it.

But while you’re doing that the desperate presenter, who’s standing like two feet away from you and staring at you, notices you looking at their poster. And they’re like “Any questions? Any questions?!

Six months before the conference you write an essay talking about your research findings that you want to put on your poster.

“. And I’m kind of afraid of looking unprofessional” “or looking like I don’t know what I’m doing.

I don’t have really time to think this through. ” So what do you do in times of uncertainty? You mimic.

You copy somebody else, and that makes you feel safe. So you open up your friend’s template, and then whatever is on that old, hand-me-down poster design, you copy.

Like whatever they did, you do. If they had their entire introduction paragraph copy-and-pasted into this tiny box in the corner, then that’s what YOU do.

You take YOUR entire entire introduction paragraph and you put it in that little box!

And then what you end up with is this monstrosity of a wall of text poster, with like copy-and-pasted bits of your essay squeezed into these templated old boxes with like your school’s faded header on top from its 25-year old branding scheme.

When I first started my Ph. D program, I tried to take an extra hour with a poster and improve the usability of it a little bit.

So here’s one of my first posters.

I had like a “so what” box, and icons and pictures for everything, but it’s still just a wall of text in the same old format. And then there are these like unicorn posters.

These are the posters that you seen on at every conference if you’re lucky. And they’re beautiful.

They’re like infographics, and they’re designed by either like professional applied firms, or grad students who WERE designers before coming to grad school. or they used templates or paid somebody.

So this is a quick video to take you through some of the basics of scientific posters So, a few things to know about posters. They should be visually attractive. They are usually something you, or academics, would do at conferences. They are often up on the walls, or on boards around the room. People mill around and they pick out the ones they want to talk more about, so they need to be reasonably eye-catching. They should be concise. You will have a limited amount of space that you need to get something, which might be a whole study, on. So you need to think carefully about the most important information. They need to be clear. You need people to be able to see some detail from a fair way away, so they want to have a further look at it. Nevertheless, they need to be academic and formal. So they still need to follow some of the requirements that your other reports or essays also follow. In terms of them being written in good, clear English and grammatically correct. And also sometimes following some of the conventions of how you title and layout some of the information. So, this is an example of a decent layout. So you can see we've got the title clearly at the start. It follows a similar kind of pattern that your reports might do, so your lab reports. So we still have an abstract, there's an introduction, you might have a table or a materials and methods section. You've still got results and conclusions There's figures in there as well, and they are often the best way to get information across clearly and quickly, and make it look visually attractive. and you'll notice at the bottom that there are references. So, even though this is a poster, you still need those references. Still using Harvard APA referencing system, as well. So, a few things to think about type and colour. So, it's nice to have a colour background, but I would say that it needs to be a muted one. So not something that's too strong, but something where you still have a contrast between the typed word and the background. But that said, it is nicer than a white background, because it is more eye-catching and sometimes it is easier to read. Also, making sure you don't over-clutter your poster. So leave some clear space. Also, thinking in terms of making sure that things follow a kind of logical progression. So, if I briefly go back to this layout, people tend to read from left to right, and top to bottom. So that's why we've got the title at the top, then abstract, introduction, and then go to the other side to read the results and conclusion, so it follows a logical order. And you can see here, there is still clear space. Also use a sans serif font. It basically means use a clear font that doesn't have too many fancy bits on it. So, anything that looks like handwriting, or old fashioned type, can be quite difficult to read. So, sticking to something like Calibri, or Arial, or something like that. Obviously, making some things obvious. So, your big title, you might want to be 90pt. Section headings 32-36 pt, main body 22-28pt. So fairly big type, as well. Which also underlines why you need to be quite concise in what you are writing. Also, we'd recommend 1. 5 to double line spacing. So you are leaving a decent amount of space between the lines, which again makes it easier to read on a poster. A few little bits about labelling. You definitely want figures on a poster, you don't want it all to be written text. You need something eye-catching and interesting to look at. So you may have figures, graphs, photographs, tables of information. They all need to be labelled, as well. And they all need to do something, too. A figure legend, as it says here, will go at the foot of the image. But also, you have that figure legend in there, saying Figure 1, so you can refer to it in the text. So they should be in there for a reason, and they should be helping to illustrate something that you are actually saying. So you don't want little bits of clip art, or photographs, in there for the sake of it. They should be related to what you are saying. Same with something like a table. So if you have got a list of results to want to give, putting it in a table may be better. They need to be labelled at the top, as this one is, and everything needs a title, as this does as well. So, probably the best way of illustrating this is to show you a few things. So this, for example, is a example of a not very good poster. So you can see that the two pictures there, the two figures, don't have any title. They don't have any legend. So, I'm not convinced that the person who has put them in is actually going to speak about them in the text. The title isn't very clear because they've used some kind of weird word art, so if you were standing far away from it, you might be able to make out Gobi Desert, but maybe not the first couple of words. It's got quite a distracting border around it. It's got a very dark background, and then the actual text is on different colours which is a bit confusing and sometimes means the contrast isn't very good, particularly in the Methods section and the Results section, where the background is quite dark. Also, things aren't quite in order. So you've got the Abstract, but then you've got a figure in the way You've got the Introduction, but for some reason it's followed by the References. You've got the Methods and the Results, but the Methods are really big, and the Results are really small. And then you've got the Discussion and Conclusions kind of shoved towards the end. So it would be much better to have it in columns, justified with each other, so you can make out what section is doing what. That's in comparison to this one, which is much better. It isn't perfect, it could be more interesting, but it is a lot clearer. So, we've got a fairly muted background, a surround which isn't too distracting. The title is clear, it could maybe be a bit clearer, it could be a bit bolder. But you can see that everything is justified. We've got the Abstract, the Introduction and the Methods, so it follows a logical path. We've got some figures in the middle which are labelled and have titles. So we'll assume they are going to talk about it in the text. And then we've got Results, Discussion and Conclusions, and References at the end. So it follows a kind of logical path, you can follow it through from left to right and top to bottom. So, things to check about your posters. Is the format clear? Does it follow a logical path? Are your diagrams, figures and graphs reasonably clear? Are they titled? Can you see at least some detail on them from far away, so they are attractive? Is the text clear? Have you used a reasonably sized font, so is the main body at least 22pt? Have you left at least 1. 5 to double line spacing? And, you yourself, if you put that up on the wall and step away from it, is it eye-catching? Is it something that would make you think 'right, I want to go and read that further'. Don’t miss the opportunityto send your abstract to the EFSA conference. BIMBI IROM: We're goingto do a peer review workshop, all right? Not peer-- review workshopof scientific posters, OK? And we're going to use the samerubric that's there for you, for your work. They were dividedinto groups, and they had to make aposter presentation of on a scientific topic. And they had to describe theprocess for a lay audience and why that posterwas important, or why the processwas important. So on that particularday, we used that as a workshop for them todo a peer review of posters that I brought in from outside. We put up the posterand the rubric together, and each group hadto judge the poster. You have to assign a number-- anumerical grade assessment, OK? For each category. You look at the headings. You look at the spacing. You look at the[? statistics. ?] You look at the color schema. You look at the clarityof the information. You look at how the posterwas structured in such a way that the reader couldeasily go from step one, to two, to three,to four, to five. And if that wasn'thappening, then they had to offer a critique. And they had to givea justification. So it was important, too, forthem to pay attention and say, OK. Why are we, as a group, givingposter number 1 a 5 out of 10, in terms of aesthetics, orcolor schema, or spacing, or structure? The point was thatthey would take away the lessons of theworkshop or the peer review back to when theyare actually starting to design those posters. And the interestingthing was that this was the same rubric thatwas going to be used for the assignment, itself. So they had tolook at the poster through the lens ofthe rubric, right? So it kind of forces them toengage with the rubric itself, and see what is it thatI, as the instructor, am asking them to do. And it's one way ofdoing it stealthily. Because if you ask themto read the rubric, I would assume not manypeople would actually sit down and read the rubric,until their grades are bad. Right? And then they comerunning back to you and say, why did I get this? Or why did I receivethis grade, that grade? So it was serving acouple of purposes-- one, engaging with the tech itself,making them use the tech productively, makingthem use the rubric, making them pay attentionto what I was looking for, and so that they can stepup their game, so to say.

The scientific poster needs to begripping so you have to focus on what your key message is and make sure youput that clearly in your title. The key message or the key tips that I would give is to really pay attention not to have unnecessary words on theposter. Minimise the text, focus on the graphics, and introduce graphics that areeasy to understand. So you clearly want to have one graphic, for example, which outlines the design of the study, the methodology that you're utilising andthen followed of course by graphics that convey the scientific results. You alsoneed to have some text that describes the main conclusions from your projectand the take-home messages. The take-home messages need to be clearly visualised and clearly described for them to be taken up by your listeners. In additionto this when you're presenting your poster to a listener you want to makesure that you assess the expertise level of your listener, so that youcan tailor your delivery to the person that's standing in front of you. Youdon't want to give the same level of details, for example, to somebody whoalready knows a bit about the topic because you will disinterest him and atthe same time for somebody who is completely unaware of the research areayou're in, you need to provide a little bit more explanation so that they'reable to follow the work that you've carried out. So often the most excitingscience because it's unpublished is covered in posters.

Hello every one, today we will be discussing which program to use to make scientific posters. You don't have much choice here, but I see frequently people screwing this up. Let's go over potential programs that people are frequently using. First we have normal powerpoint, you can also get this fro free if you use Open office, LibreOffice or StarOffice. and then we have three Adobe programs. We have Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. So which program should you use? Well actually powerpoint is not that bad most people are already familiar with powerpoint. And if you create a big spread in the beginning you can align all your objects on the spread and it's quite simple to use. So if you don't have much time for your poster and you want to have still a decent poster it's totally fine to use powerpoint. However as powerpoint is not supporting any vector graphics you should make sure that all your pictures are really big and have a heigh resolution (dpi). If people are interested I will also make a tutorial and show you how to use powerpoint to make your poster. Then we have the other three programs from Adobe. Let's talk about the obvious bad choice here this is of cause photoshop. As the name says it's fro photos and we want to make a poster. And the problem with photoshop is that it is pixel based so you would need to put out the actual poster for print in a very big resolution to get it to print nicely. Also photoshop doesn't support text very well. So for a movie poster photoshop is very nice but for a scientific poster with quite some text and some lines and figures and so on photoshop should never be considered for making a poster. Then we are left with InDesign and illustrator. And quite often people use Illustrator. And to be honest, that is not a very bad choice however we have some specific problems with illustrator. First wen don't have spelling correction. And then also some text features with text kerning, so the spacing between letters and things like that so the really fine detailed things are not very well implemented into illustrator. Also if you want to use boxes with rounded corners as it is used on posters quite often Illustrator has some problems if you resize the boxes. So if you pay attention when looking at some posters you can really tell if people made those with illustrator and just dragged the boxes to resize them and there where screwing up the corners. So why should you use InDesign then? Well InDesign works pretty much like powerpoint. You have a big spread where you can place things on. Also InDesign is very well made for text because it's made basically for print media like magazines and newspapers. And the really nice thing about InDesign is that it does integrate very well with illustrator and photoshop as well. So inDesign it self gives you the very nice text function and very nice boxes that look very well on posters. Also very nice features to align your elements on the poster it self. Because it's a layout program for print, that's exactly what we need. And the big trick with InDesign is that you can take your illustrator file, so lets say we have made a figure or flowchart. Vector based of cause so it prints nicely. We put it into InDesign and then it actually gets linked so now we have a complex figure in InDesign it self that we would normally make with illustrator, which we actually did. And if we now want to change something in this figure, we can just open the *. Ai document in illustrator and make our changes and this will be updated in InDesign automatically. The same thing goes for pictures that we make with photoshop. This way our main document is not very cluttered and it's still very very easy to work with. If you would do the same thing in illustrator we would get the problem that we would have all of our graphics in one document and this can get very messed up with different layers and so on, so we don't want to do that. So I highly recommend using InDesign and if you don't have much time and you are more familiar with powerpoint there is also nothing wrong with using powerpoint. Sure you can till use illustrator but I think inDesign has some key advantages above illustrator and pleas never try to use photoshop to make a complete poster. So it's very simple; InDesign for the layout, illustrator as the name is telling you only for illustrations and photoshop only for photos. If you keep those things in mid (almost) nothing can go wrong with your poster.

Click the Printer drop-down menu, and select your printer from the list.

Click Properties, Preferences or Printer Properties.

Click the Finishing tab.

So this is a quick video to take you through some of the basics of scientific posters So, a few things to know about posters. They should be visually attractive. They are usually something you, or academics, would do at conferences. They are often up on the walls, or on boards around the room. People mill around and they pick out the ones they want to talk more about, so they need to be reasonably eye-catching. They should be concise. You will have a limited amount of space that you need to get something, which might be a whole study, on. So you need to think carefully about the most important information. They need to be clear. You need people to be able to see some detail from a fair way away, so they want to have a further look at it. Nevertheless, they need to be academic and formal. So they still need to follow some of the requirements that your other reports or essays also follow. In terms of them being written in good, clear English and grammatically correct. And also sometimes following some of the conventions of how you title and layout some of the information. So, this is an example of a decent layout. So you can see we've got the title clearly at the start. It follows a similar kind of pattern that your reports might do, so your lab reports. So we still have an abstract, there's an introduction, you might have a table or a materials and methods section. You've still got results and conclusions There's figures in there as well, and they are often the best way to get information across clearly and quickly, and make it look visually attractive. and you'll notice at the bottom that there are references. So, even though this is a poster, you still need those references. Still using Harvard APA referencing system, as well. So, a few things to think about type and colour. So, it's nice to have a colour background, but I would say that it needs to be a muted one. So not something that's too strong, but something where you still have a contrast between the typed word and the background. But that said, it is nicer than a white background, because it is more eye-catching and sometimes it is easier to read. Also, making sure you don't over-clutter your poster. So leave some clear space. Also, thinking in terms of making sure that things follow a kind of logical progression. So, if I briefly go back to this layout, people tend to read from left to right, and top to bottom. So that's why we've got the title at the top, then abstract, introduction, and then go to the other side to read the results and conclusion, so it follows a logical order. And you can see here, there is still clear space. Also use a sans serif font. It basically means use a clear font that doesn't have too many fancy bits on it. So, anything that looks like handwriting, or old fashioned type, can be quite difficult to read. So, sticking to something like Calibri, or Arial, or something like that. Obviously, making some things obvious. So, your big title, you might want to be 90pt. Section headings 32-36 pt, main body 22-28pt. So fairly big type, as well. Which also underlines why you need to be quite concise in what you are writing. Also, we'd recommend 1. 5 to double line spacing. So you are leaving a decent amount of space between the lines, which again makes it easier to read on a poster. A few little bits about labelling. You definitely want figures on a poster, you don't want it all to be written text. You need something eye-catching and interesting to look at. So you may have figures, graphs, photographs, tables of information. They all need to be labelled, as well. And they all need to do something, too. A figure legend, as it says here, will go at the foot of the image. But also, you have that figure legend in there, saying Figure 1, so you can refer to it in the text. So they should be in there for a reason, and they should be helping to illustrate something that you are actually saying. So you don't want little bits of clip art, or photographs, in there for the sake of it. They should be related to what you are saying. Same with something like a table. So if you have got a list of results to want to give, putting it in a table may be better. They need to be labelled at the top, as this one is, and everything needs a title, as this does as well. So, probably the best way of illustrating this is to show you a few things. So this, for example, is a example of a not very good poster. So you can see that the two pictures there, the two figures, don't have any title. They don't have any legend. So, I'm not convinced that the person who has put them in is actually going to speak about them in the text. The title isn't very clear because they've used some kind of weird word art, so if you were standing far away from it, you might be able to make out Gobi Desert, but maybe not the first couple of words. It's got quite a distracting border around it. It's got a very dark background, and then the actual text is on different colours which is a bit confusing and sometimes means the contrast isn't very good, particularly in the Methods section and the Results section, where the background is quite dark. Also, things aren't quite in order. So you've got the Abstract, but then you've got a figure in the way You've got the Introduction, but for some reason it's followed by the References. You've got the Methods and the Results, but the Methods are really big, and the Results are really small. And then you've got the Discussion and Conclusions kind of shoved towards the end. So it would be much better to have it in columns, justified with each other, so you can make out what section is doing what. That's in comparison to this one, which is much better. It isn't perfect, it could be more interesting, but it is a lot clearer. So, we've got a fairly muted background, a surround which isn't too distracting. The title is clear, it could maybe be a bit clearer, it could be a bit bolder. But you can see that everything is justified. We've got the Abstract, the Introduction and the Methods, so it follows a logical path. We've got some figures in the middle which are labelled and have titles. So we'll assume they are going to talk about it in the text. And then we've got Results, Discussion and Conclusions, and References at the end. So it follows a kind of logical path, you can follow it through from left to right and top to bottom. So, things to check about your posters. Is the format clear? Does it follow a logical path? Are your diagrams, figures and graphs reasonably clear? Are they titled? Can you see at least some detail on them from far away, so they are attractive? Is the text clear? Have you used a reasonably sized font, so is the main body at least 22pt? Have you left at least 1. 5 to double line spacing? And, you yourself, if you put that up on the wall and step away from it, is it eye-catching? Is it something that would make you think 'right, I want to go and read that further'. Posters at the Capitol is an opportunity for undergraduate students who have undertaken research projects mentored by faculty to show off their work, to show it off in a very public location, and to show it off in a location where the money that often supports those projects comes from, the legislature. It’s always nice to have some kind of recognition when you put this kind of time and effort into a project. Doing research with the University of Louisville as an undergrad has been a great opportunity for me. The fact that I have gotten to work so closely with other students, professors in the biology department and it’s been a great talking piece for applying to graduate schools as well. This event is to call attention to the legislators, to the importance of undergraduate research, to the overall curriculum, and it’s for their support for undergraduate curriculum and also for research. It’s also important to engage students in research because it helps with retention and graduation rates. Research has been a great opportunity and like I’ve said it’s been a lot of fun, I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s definitely made my career as an undergrad better all around.
