Hello everyone, and welcome to the new inDesign tutorial series. In this series I will be teaching you how to make academic posters with InDesign CS6. If you go to conferences as a scientist or engineer you often need to bring your own poster to present your research. I think most people don't really enjoy making posters so if you look at posters on the internet or on conferences where you are going most of the times it's just a big wall of text and not very nice to look at. So I want you to remember that posters are something visual. So in this tutorial I will not only talk about how to get the right amount of text but also how to get a very nice flow and layout and also how to use figures and graphics to make your poster very attractive. If you need to make a poster for a conference I really hope you see this as an opportunity to design something, to create something, to be a little bit of an artist. Even if you are a scientist, I think every one can have a lot of fun making a poster and it's great if it looks very nice in the end. Because a great poster will also help to also promote your research. So in this course I will be helping you to make a great poster. But before we start making the poster I want you to consider some key things before you open up InDesign. First of all you should really figure out who is attending the conference. It is a very specialised conference on e. G. neuro science or a particular group of organisms? Or has the conference a very broad field? So depending on that you will have some experts from your field or you will have general students of professors from other fields as well and you need to adjust the style and information in your posters accordingly. So if the conference is for a general audience, you want to keep it very simple and don't use special terms that only people from your field are using. Secondly figure out the actual dimensions of your poster. On conferences you get only one specific wall, where you can put your poster on and if your poster is to big you will not be able to hang it on your poster wall. So usually posters are in A1 or A0 and also think about if the poster needs to be in landscape or if it can be in the normal orientation. You will find those informations on the conference website or if you apply for a conference. Now as you know the size and orientation of your poster it's really important that you make a draft so take out a pice of paper and make a rough sketch with what you want to put on your poster and also what sections you want to have. Like introduction, materials and methods and how much space they should take on your poster. Normally the results section should have the biggest space on the poster. And as we are making a poster in this tutorial as well I have done this for the poster we will make. So you should have an idea what your layout should look like and what contents should go on your poster. It's really key here to concentrate your research to the most important points only, because if you don't do this you will end up with a wall of text. Also try to keep it to 300 words total on your poster if you end up with 400, well thats all right but if you really go above 400 you need to scrape something away. So really try here to aim for 300 words and don't forget that the poster should be a lot move visual and not written like a thesis with a lot of words. Now as you have figured out what you want to put on your poster you should also discuss it with your supervisor. And then one last important point is that you should not worry to much about details now. The first step is as we have our draft, to get our text and figures into InDesign. To get a basic overview if our layout idea works and how everything looks together. And then we can work on the details and polish the poster and really choose the right font size, choose the right font and so on, work on all the edges. So make sure to get the contend on the poster first and then tweak all the layout things and make everything look nice. Your Same Day Poster Printing Plan

Here, the plate maker sends each job to an thermal infrared plate imaging machine.

Aluminum plates containing an infrared sensitive emulsion, load into the plate setter where it wraps around the imaging drum.

The drum spins at a dizzying thousand RPMs as an infrared laser exposes an image onto the plate.

From there, the now exposed aluminum plate moves to the processor, a four-step treatment is applied: developer chemical, water, buffing and gumming for further scratch protection.

A place for each color in the CMYK file are printed for transfer to the press.

Maxed out, the Komori press can print a stunning sixteen-thousand sheets per hour.

The Pressman takes the aluminum plates and hangs them on ink units each corresponding color.

Cling sheets are fed from the back of the machine.

A series of conveyers and rollers rapidly shoot each sheet under cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink units.

The rollers even distribute shoot ink to the plates, which offsets the ink to a blanket roller than in turn applies ink to the paper, coated sheets are then fed through aqueous coating unit and run across heating elements for drying.

Every few hundred sheets, the pressman pulls a sheet for analysis.

He scans a color bar along the bottom edge for color accuracy.

Visual inspection is also needed to check for highest quality, after printing the sheets move to the cutter.

A large industrial cutting machine slices up to 1,000 sheets.

Each job is then separated for transfer to their Particular finishing processes.

From there, your booklets are placed into a machine for scoring and folding.

A conveyer allows for continuous loading of jobs for maximum efficiency.

After the worker activates the machine, each booklet shoots towards the folder plates where up to four folds are applied along with scoring.

The final step is stitching.

The stitcher loads your booklet pages sequentially into the saddle stitching machine, the gathering chain pulls each booklet to the stitching unit, which places two wire stitchings along the edge.

The booklets then move to the trimming unit, slicing off the remaining edges.

The result? A high-quality, quick turn booklet ready to ship via our in-house mailing facility to your customer’s door.

BIMBI IROM: We're goingto do a peer review workshop, all right? Not peer-- review workshopof scientific posters, OK? And we're going to use the samerubric that's there for you, for your work. They were dividedinto groups, and they had to make aposter presentation of on a scientific topic. And they had to describe theprocess for a lay audience and why that posterwas important, or why the processwas important. So on that particularday, we used that as a workshop for them todo a peer review of posters that I brought in from outside. We put up the posterand the rubric together, and each group hadto judge the poster. You have to assign a number-- anumerical grade assessment, OK? For each category. You look at the headings. You look at the spacing. You look at the[? statistics. ?] You look at the color schema. You look at the clarityof the information. You look at how the posterwas structured in such a way that the reader couldeasily go from step one, to two, to three,to four, to five. And if that wasn'thappening, then they had to offer a critique. And they had to givea justification. So it was important, too, forthem to pay attention and say, OK. Why are we, as a group, givingposter number 1 a 5 out of 10, in terms of aesthetics, orcolor schema, or spacing, or structure? The point was thatthey would take away the lessons of theworkshop or the peer review back to when theyare actually starting to design those posters. And the interestingthing was that this was the same rubric thatwas going to be used for the assignment, itself. So they had tolook at the poster through the lens ofthe rubric, right? So it kind of forces them toengage with the rubric itself, and see what is it thatI, as the instructor, am asking them to do. And it's one way ofdoing it stealthily. Because if you ask themto read the rubric, I would assume not manypeople would actually sit down and read the rubric,until their grades are bad. Right? And then they comerunning back to you and say, why did I get this? Or why did I receivethis grade, that grade? So it was serving acouple of purposes-- one, engaging with the tech itself,making them use the tech productively, makingthem use the rubric, making them pay attentionto what I was looking for, and so that they can stepup their game, so to say.
